This Encinitas garden hadn’t been touched in close to 15 years. An awkward entry with several structural issues needed to be fixed. The existing slope had ice-plant covering it and the patio was a mix of rock, terra cotta tiles, random walls and dead or dying plant material.
The homeowners had mixed ideas of what they wanted. The program consisted of a new entry, natural-looking plant materials, and as the time came closer for plant installation, the theme switched from Cacti/Succulent plantings to Asian/Zen style plantings. The new entry uses over 15 tons of Granite to create a natural-looking path over a dry stream-bed. Mounds of grasses, Black pines, and flowering Pear trees, along with Japanese Maples, Sweet Flag Grass, and Junipers make up the plantings. The owners plan on painting the house in the near future and redesigning the backyard to compliment the front.
